Description

''Star Anna is an American original. She sings from a place of beauty that takes me to a higher place,'' says Pearl Jam's Mike McCready. Guns 'n' Roses' Duff McKagan furthers, ''She is the real deal. She will be a talent that we can all say that we saw her when. Guaranteed.'' Star Anna's latest will have you saying the exact same things. A dark, haunting collection of songs that capture the essence of betrayal, regret, and hope, here you'll find melodic, soaring folk-rock with an Americana bent. Americana-soul may be how some will describe it, and they wouldn't be off the mark. Star's voice is rich and passionate, deep and smokey, and the songs deliver with equal punchy, heart-wrenching urgency. It may be titled Go To Hell, but the songs will take you to a much happier place, even while the lyrics recall times when perseverance was the only option. Also available on CD.

As a long-time follower of Star Anna, I have never been disappointed in her growth as an artist and performer. With each of her four releases, her songwriting and vocals tell me something new about her take on the human condition in a voice that is achingly beautiful which paints her lyrics in the recognizable emotions we all share. And there are many of them here. Above all, Star is a survivor and her themes of hope and resilience emerge throughout. I like Go To Hell very much in that Star steps out from being "in the band" to the forefront. Putting down her guitar has allowed her to focus on her vocals talents and reach new levels. Stand out songs For Anyone, Mean Kind of Love, Electric Lights continue her path toward a knowing and wisdom well beyond her years. The inclusion of covers of Tom Waits, Nina Simone and Elvis allow her growing audience to enjoy her interpretations of established works which respectfully become her own. (Watch her September 6th, 2013 show in Portland on YouTube for more). Her forte in Americana is well represented on Go To Hell. Have to say that the hyper punk vocals and guitar thrash on Smoke Signals give wonderful insight into her inner self and remind all of us to 'kick out the jams' from time to time! Don't hesitate: Go To Hell right now!
